"Sensors have a contact. It's not close, yet, but they have active scans, and they are definitely looking for something. Probably us."
A moment of silence from the other end punctuated their mutual feelings. "Great. Just great." Jared swore. "What's the plan? Fight, run, or hide? We got plenty of supplies on the depot. How long do I have before you leave? If they're going to find this, should I take the most valuable stuff and blow the rest?" "I'll get back to you on that," Kina said, her mind racing with too many options. She was not ready to command a ship, but she had to command now, or they were all dead. She closed the channel, and played her hands across the navigation board. With the captain's chair in ruins, this was where she wanted to be. "Report!" She yelled as the displays in front of her showed that she had warp at 100%, with the impulse at 50%. From her right, the sensor operator called out: "Single contact, about 140,000 kilometers from our position. It's hard to tell through the debris. Warp output says it's a destroyer. I make it one of those Klingon K5Bs, but the signal is fuzzy and it could be one of their older ships." Kina winced. A K5B and a frigate had defended the convoy. If this was the same K5B, was the frigate here too? Would the frigate be nearby, cloaked, waiting to pounce? Was the K5B here, alone, looking for them? Was this a different vessel entirely, on a routine patrol? She dismissed that last option, and concentrated on what she had. "Weapons?" "We have all three amidships phasers, warming the capacitors now, ready in about 30 seconds." The report was quickly delivered. "The wing phasers and the photon are still offline. Batteries at 33%." "Very well. Keep the ship on silent running." Kina opened her communicator again, and contacted Jared. "We're staying for now, but be ready to move on 30 seconds notice. Put somebody in charge and get back on board. I need the photon up. Now. Then I need the batteries repaired. Save the other weapons for later. Have anyone you can spare move the highest value material onto the ship." "Right..." She could hear him begin to order the repair crews as the communication link closed.
"Shields?" "The fore-starboard shield is at 50% and rising. We're putting all the power we can into it as we speak." "Good. Weapons?" "The phasers are charged now. What did you want to do with our shuttle?" Kina blinked. She had forgotten that they still had a working shuttle in the bay. She thought hard. She knew what would be far better for her in the current situation than a suicide bomb, or even a manned platform. "Prepare it as a plasma decoy. When the photon is repaired, arm it as much as we can afford to." "Aye, Skipper." Bridge, Romulan K5B Rapier
