The Dual: Two Fed Cruisers vs Two Klingons.

The Federation and the Klingons approached each other with caution. I was the Fed player vs Scott and Rob. I thought they would keep their speed up and dance around me, but no they ran around at 16 like me. We exchanged shots at mid ranges and of course I rolled high. Nothing like missing w/ Photo Torpedoes. They got the better of that exchange and then the Feds found themselves running from drones. The second exchange at mid-range put the final nail in the Fed coffin. I should have ran them over, ate some of the drones and rolled lower.

Hmm . . . next time I’ll have to bring out the Kzin or perhaps an Andromedan scenario.

Well done Klingons. This just goes to show, just because you own the rules it doesn’t make you a good tactician.

FC Demo

Details: Galaxy M31 Battle Group Report Saturday January 7th
Attendees: Will, Rob, Tim, Mike and Dan
Scenario Played: (8B124) Demo Derby from FC Briefing #1
Rules choice: wrap-around map

We played with the squadron scale cruisers, players picked their favorite ship. Since most of the folks had not played before, this was exciting, but did not unbalance the game. The moderator also tried to play at the same time. There were many lessons I learned about hosting a teaching demonstration game. First, if you provide excellent food and a lot of it, the players will pretty much forgive anything.

Rob played a Klingon D5, Mike a Kzinti, Tim ISC, Will a Romulan and Dan an Andromedan; we all started on separate panels using the large hex side.

The Klingon and Kzinti faced off and the Klingon did pretty well in the exchange. The wrap-around map makes it a harder for the races with seeking weapons to actually trap / hit their opponents. The ISC and Romulan faced off and exchanged blows. Running away from plasma is a very viable tactic. The Andromedan exchanged an alfa strike (at a distance) with the Romulan and ran away. Unfortunately, the Andromedan ran right into the waiting disruptors of the Klingon. Dinner was excellent, consisting of a variety of brauts, sausages, buns and a variety of condiments. Most of us had seconds.

Lessons learned:

  • Do not host and play at the same time you are teaching the game
  • Do not use the wrap-around map rule
  • Do not give the players too many choices or else you must have mastered all of the rules (consider crib notes for each race in the game)
  • Do serve good food
  • Do use the smallest ships possible (next time I’m using frigates) )
  • Do have fun and play with nice people)
  • If you are playing the Andromedans (and who isn’t?) when running away to do a power dump DO NOT head toward the Klingon! (or any other ship with working weapons)
